中年英語好き

50代を目前に控えた中年サラリーマンです。中学・高校の英語教師の資格を取りましたが、バブル景気もあって一般企業に就職。ところが、なんと海外部門に配属され、本気で使える英語を身につけなければならなくなりました。その後、NY駐在も経験させてもらい、英語がライフワークの一つになりました。年男の年頭を機に、ブログを使って毎週の出来事を簡単な英語で紹介することにしました。自分の勉強にもなりますし、ブログをご覧の皆様のお役に立てれば幸いです。

Politics

Discussion of security-related legislation for achieving Self-Defense Forces activity expansion began in the House of Representatives. For certification of existence crisis situation, the government did not show strict criteria, it has become clear that it is left to the discretion of the government.

For the prevention of travel to dangerous areas, Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the report that  there is a possibility to apply the passport return instruction.

Health care reform laws aimed at reducing medical expenses are passed and established in the Upper House plenary session.

Business

Government and casualty insurance companies entered the final adjustment towards the hike for home earthquake insurance premium.

As there is a possibility that the butter is in short supply, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has announced an additional import of 10,000 tons.

Income from insurance premiums of Dai-ichi Life is greater than that of Nippon Life Insurance Company, and Dai-ichi Life becomes the industry leader for the first time after the war.

The yen exchange rate on the Tokyo Foreign Exchange market temporarily dropped to 124 yen 30 sen, which was the weaker yen for about 12 and a half years.  By favorable impression of the weak yen, the Nikkei Stock Average was rise in 11 consecutive business days.


World

Regarding the South China Sea issue, the Chinese government, who has Philippines and Vietnam in mind, criticized as "to enhance the military presence in the illegally occupied on China's reef."

The United States asked to stop immediately the landfill in the South China Sea, which China is underway, and showed a policy that  the US military continued to monitor activities around the site.

US Department of Justice has indicted 14 people, including nine Federation Internationale de Football Association officials on charges such as bribery. They were suspected to have received a bribe from companies for broadcasting and sponsorship rights of the game.

Japan

The Ministry of Education investigation found that English teachers of the public schools who have semi primary or more equivalent qualification were 55% in high school and 28% in junior high school.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the safety regulations that defines the operation management rules of the Sendai nuclear power plant.

Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has officially decided to prohibit the provision of raw lever or meat of pigs from this June.

An explosive eruption was happened at Kuchino-erabujima, Kagoshima Prefecture, and all islanders were evacuated to Yakushima.
